KONGSBERG and MAN Energy Solutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the purpose of exploring the potential for collaboration on a common data infrastructure for the maritime sector. The collaboration will broaden the value offering to vessel operators, improve return on investment in digital solutions and increase the adoption of secure connectivity.

ONE SEA, the industry alliance whose primary aim is to lead the way towards an operating autonomous maritime ecosystem by 2025, has appointed Riku-Pekka Hägg as Chairman of its Management Board.

Fleet Data from Inmarsat, a world leader in global, mobile satellite communications has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from leading classification society Bureau Veritas. This is a major milestone for the maritime industry’s leading secure sensor data and Internet of Things (IoT) platform. Conditions of approval by Bureau Veritas verify that Fleet Data can be installed safely on board, without its operation affecting existing navigation, safety and radio communication systems.

The technology group Wärtsilä has been selected to engineer, supply, and commission a hybrid propulsion system for an offshore sector vessel. Norway-based Eidesvik AS has contracted Wärtsilä to carry out the upgrade project on its ‘Viking Neptun’ construction vessel. The order was placed in August 2019. This latest order follows two similar hybrid upgrade contracts awarded to Wärtsilä in recent months.

In a bid to reduce emissions from shipping, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a target of January 2020 for the implementation of a new policy that limits the sulfur content of maritime fuel to 0.50 %. No mean feat when the current maximum is 3.50 % and high-sulfur fuel has been the norm for many years. International guidance to help has just been published.
