In support of the Biden-Harris administration’s goal of deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy capacity by 2030, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) announced its approval of Empire Wind’s Construction and Operations Plan (COP), which authorizes construction and operation of the wind energy project offshore. This is the project’s final approval from BOEM, following the agency’s Record of Decision approving the project in November 2023.

New York State has selected Ørsted and Eversource to negotiate a new 25-year contract for their Sunrise Wind offshore wind farm. This conditional award brings the 924-megawatt project one critical step closer to fulfilling its promise to deliver substantial economic benefits across New York and help the state meet its climate goals.

Odfjell Oceanwind, together with the leading automation and manufacturing expert Prodtex, have established a joint venture to address what is expected to become one of the biggest bottlenecks in scaling the floating offshore wind industry: low cost and high-capacity manufacturing of foundations for floating wind turbines. The joint venture is created to establish the production capacity necessary to meet the need for hundreds of floating wind foundations per year in Europa alone and is looking to have its first facility operational by 2027. Recently, the industry veteran Geir Bjørkeli, former CEO of Corvus Energy, has been appointed to head up the venture.

BOEM estimates the proposed project would generate up to 2,600 megawatts (MW) of electricity, enough to power more than 900,000 homes with clean, renewable energy.

Oceantic Network, in partnership with SeaAhead, announces the participants of Startup Alley at 2024 IPF, which provides a platform for the most innovative startups in the offshore wind and ocean renewables industries to pitch their ideas. This year, ten start-up companies whose technologies and products serve ocean renewable development will present at the Network’s annual International Partnering Forum (IPF), taking place in New Orleans April 22-25 (IPF Week).

Prysmian, world leader in the energy and telecom cable systems industry, has finalized a contract worth around €1.9 billion by Eastern Green Link 2 Limited, a joint venture between SSEN Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission plc—the UK electricity transmission network owners. Under the contact, Prysmian will deliver a major HVDC cable system for the Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) network development project that shall connect Scotland and England.

Hexicon AB (Hexicon) signed a Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPA) to take full ownership of MunmuBaram Co., Ltd. from its joint venture partner Shell Overseas Investments B.V. Under the agreement, Hexicon AB will increase its stake in the project from 20% to 100%, increasing the project portfolio by 900 MW. Completion of the transaction is subject to regulatory approval.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in partnership with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, launched an 18-month initiative to gather extensive weather, ocean, and wildlife data near the sites of five offshore wind farms and lease areas off the coast of the Northeast United States. This effort, which is part of the third phase of the Wind Forecast Improvement Project (WFIP3), seeks to gather high-quality data to improve the design and operation of offshore wind turbines and wind farms. The collected data will be publicly available and used to inform responsible offshore wind siting, weather forecasting, and grid integration, as well as support advancements in weather and wind plant modeling.

DEME Group (DEME) is excited to announce that its offshore installation vessel Orion has successfully installed its first XXL monopile foundation at the Moray West offshore wind farm in Scotland. DEME’s scope includes both the installation of monopiles and transition pieces. Using vibro hammer technology, DEME is minimizing the environmental impact from vibrations.
