Thuraya Telecommunications Company, a mobile satellite services subsidiary of the Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat) is participating in OilComm 2019, the Houston-based event for oil and gas professionals to explore trending innovations in the communications and digital industries. At the two-day symposium, Thuraya will display its top satellite solutions for land and offshore energy applications, besides seeking new partners to expand its growing IoT/M2M ecosystem.

Fleet Data from Inmarsat, a world leader in global, mobile satellite communications has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from leading classification society Bureau Veritas. This is a major milestone for the maritime industry’s leading secure sensor data and Internet of Things (IoT) platform. Conditions of approval by Bureau Veritas verify that Fleet Data can be installed safely on board, without its operation affecting existing navigation, safety and radio communication systems.

Leading Classification Society ClassNK has released “Guidelines for Remote Surveys” in preparation for carrying out remote surveys (*1) using ICT (Information and Communication Technology) (*2). The guidelines outline requirements to apply to remote surveys for some types of occasional surveys, and from now on ClassNK will implement remote surveys that satisfy the requirements.

4Subsea has been acquired by Subsea 7 in a 100% stock buyout. The acquisition will enable further enhancement and scaling of 4Subsea’s know-how, technology and services to a worldwide market. 4Subsea will function autonomously within Subsea 7, maintaining an independent brand and management team. 4Subsea’s Peter Jenkins will continue in his role as CEO of the company.

The technology group Wärtsilä has been selected to engineer, supply, and commission a hybrid propulsion system for an offshore sector vessel. Norway-based Eidesvik AS has contracted Wärtsilä to carry out the upgrade project on its ‘Viking Neptun’ construction vessel. The order was placed in August 2019. This latest order follows two similar hybrid upgrade contracts awarded to Wärtsilä in recent months.

In a bid to reduce emissions from shipping, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a target of January 2020 for the implementation of a new policy that limits the sulfur content of maritime fuel to 0.50 %. No mean feat when the current maximum is 3.50 % and high-sulfur fuel has been the norm for many years. International guidance to help has just been published.
