A NEW innovation in safety event will hear that the reliability and security of networked systems, critical to boosting safety performance on and offshore, is covered by new EU legislation being rolled-out in the UK, when it goes ahead in Aberdeen this month.
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) electrical and control systems principal specialist inspector John Pirie will tell the event that developers must ensure the ongoing reliability of systems to meet requirements of the EU directive on Network and Information Systems (NIS), which has been implemented into UK legislation.
Market-leading marine and offshore safety equipment specialist Dräger Safety UK is organising the event at the Chester Hotel on Thursday, June 14. Wider themes of cybersecurity will be addressed by experts from its wireless gas detection research and development team, GasSecure.
Alex Duthie, Dräger Safety UK’s sales and marketing director, said: “The implementation of the EU directive on Network and Information Systems (NIS) has a crucial impact on supply chain companies supporting oil and gas operators.
“Dräger has made a significant R&D investment over the last 21 months, to ensure our networked gas detection technologies are safe from cyber-attack and that our place as part of the wider supply of oil and gas utility services is secure too.
“Our technologies are relied on as early warning systems to preserve life and asset integrity so we have a vital responsibility to ensure they cannot be infiltrated or put sensitive data at risk.”
Dräger, which has supported operations in the UKCS from its base in Aberdeen since 2011, has boosted its North Sea presence by winning several high-profile contract awards from operators and oilfield service providers in late 2017 and early this year.
Renowned for its fixed and wireless gas detection technologies and personal protection equipment, the company has also developed a new portable, networked gas detection and alarm system designed to protect people working in any location offshore.
UK Government department, the National Cyber Security Centre, was responsible for activating the NIS Directive into domestic legislation by May 9, 2018. Providers of nationally essential services, including energy, are affected by the new rules.
The Dräger Innovation Event will be held at the Chester Hotel, 59-63 Queen’s Road, Aberdeen, AB15 4YP, between 4pm and 8pm on June 14, 2018. As well as the presentations, there will be drinks and canapés, product demonstrations and networking.
