Offshore wind is key in the transition to a low-carbon economy. The sector has experienced tremendous growth in recent years: countries that border the North Sea regularly multiply their gigawatt capacity targets; the US is expanding rapidly; and Asia Pacific is catching up fast. But is having the ambition to hit net zero in 2050 enough?

With nine Phase One winners named, the first phase of the three-phase American-Made FLoating Offshore Wind ReadINess (FLOWIN) Prize has concluded, kicking off Phase Two. Each Phase One winner will receive $100,000 in cash and $75,000 in vouchers for technical support provided by the U.S. Department of Energy’s national laboratories, along with an invitation to compete in Phase Two of the competition.

In a major milestone towards meeting the Biden-Harris administration’s goal to deploy 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030, the Department of the Interior announces that the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) has completed its review of critical design and installation reports for the South Fork Wind project, clearing the way for the start of turbine construction offshore Rhode Island and New York.

TerraSond and Benthic, Geo-services brands in Acteon’s Data and Robotics division, have been awarded a combined geophysical and geotechnical survey work scope by the BlueFloat Energy and Renantis Partnership for its Bellrock and Broadshore wind farms northeast of Aberdeen, Scotland. BlueFloat Energy and Renantis joined forces to develop floating offshore wind projects in response to last year’s ScotWind licensing round. When operational, the Bellrock and Broadshore wind farms will have capacities of 1200 and 900 MW, respectively.

NKT has been awarded a supply contract for the delivery of the high-voltage DC on- and offshore export cable system to the Hornsea 3 project which is being developed by Ørsted. For NKT, the final order has an estimated contract value of approx. EUR 500m in market prices (approx. EUR 400m in std. metal prices).

Aker Solutions and Principle Power have been awarded a US Floating Offshore Wind Readiness Prize which will set forth an ambitious vision to establish a sustainable and competitive domestic supply chain ecosystem to deliver floating offshore wind projects in the United States.
