Acteon Completes Major Offshore Wind Subsea Inspection & Survey Campaigns

Acteon completed two significant subsea balance of plant (BoP) inspection and survey campaigns for offshore wind developments in 2024.

The first project, led by UTEC, a brand in Acteon’s Geo-services business line, is the first campaign within a three-year contract awarded by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) for the Butendiek offshore wind farm. Located approximately 32 km west of the island of Sylt in the German sector of the North Sea, the wind farm has been fully operational since 2015. This project included annual subsea foundation remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) inspections, array cable and foundation seabed surveys, and corrosion protection surveys covering the wind turbine generators (WTG) and the offshore substation (OSS). UTEC performed a multibeam echosounder (MBES) seabed survey of the array cables and OSS/WTG scour protection, while Deepwater supported with a corrosion protection survey. Deepwater is a brand in Acteon’s Energy Services business line

The second project was undertaken by TerraSond, now part of UTEC, for the Vineyard Wind 1 wind farm. Located 15 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard, Vineyard Wind 1 is a joint venture between Avangrid Renewables and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and the first major utility-scale offshore wind farm in US waters. The work included ROV inspections of WTG and OSS foundations and their corrosion protection systems, and more than 500 line kilometers of seabed survey over the as-laid export, inter-array cables, and installed scour protection systems. TerraSond’s work on the Vineyard Wind 1 project added to Acteon Geo-services’ solid experience and track record in supporting the US East Coast offshore wind industry and the local supply chain over the 80+ day campaign that utilized three separate vessels.

Ben Johnston, Balance of Plant Lead, UTEC, said, “Completing these two major subsea balances of plant inspection and survey campaigns is a testament to Acteon’s commitment to providing high-quality operations and maintenance services to the offshore wind industry. Our teams have demonstrated exceptional expertise and dedication, reinforcing our trusted supply chain partner position.”
