Trelleborg’s SafePilot CAT MAX Maneuvers Maersk Interceptor in the North Sea

The SafePilot CAT MAX system from Trelleborg’s marine and infrastructure operation has been used by DanPilot, the official pilotage of the Danish state, to complete the task of maneuvering the Maersk Interceptor, a high-value jackup rig located in an ‘ultra-harsh’ environment in the North Sea, off the coast of Denmark.

The Maersk Interceptor is one of the world’s largest and most advanced jackup drilling rigs. The maneuvering of such assets requires a high end, ultra-precise, lightweight and fully portable navigation and piloting system, making CAT MAX the ideal solution.

Claus Lambek Kristensen, Pilot for DanPilot said: “Both located in the North Sea, the task of placing the Maersk Interceptor on berth 52 next to the Maersk Innovator, initially presented itself to be challenging. The Interceptor is a 105-metre-wide jackup rig located in a challenging environment. With just a basic GPS located in the control room, it does not have the latest navigational equipment on board. We struggled to find a suitable conning position on the rig to provide a clear overview of operations and ran into difficulties when trying to place the navigational equipment within range. We were also met with rough weather conditions, which had an impact on our window of operations.  “Trelleborg’s CAT MAX was the ideal solution due to its size, weight, portability, extreme accuracy and ease of setup and use. CAT MAX was successful in helping us face our piloting challenges and we were able to safely and efficiently transport the Maersk Interceptor to its desired location.”

Tommy Guldhammer Mikkelsen, Managing Director of Trelleborg’s marine and infrastructure operation, commented: “A project of this size and nature required a reliable and intelligent navigation and piloting solution. Trelleborg’s marine and infrastructure operation has been a leader in technological advancements in portable pilot units since the 1990s. The SafePilot CAT MAX is small and extremely precise, with the ability to give less than one centimeter accuracy anywhere in the world, making it the ideal solution for offshore operations, especially in confined waters. Together with the SafePilot App it offers a 360 degree view of the operation at hand.”

Powered by smart technology, SafePilot CAT MAX is a ship independent system packed with sensors that can position a vessel in three dimensions. Together with Trelleborg’s SafePilot software, it forms part of the SmartPort portfolio, powering the critical interface between ship and port, on land and at sea. It connects port operations, allowing operators to analyze performance and use data to improve decision making. The system integrates assets like fenders, mooring equipment, ship performance monitoring, and navigation systems, underpinned by cloud technologies.
