Suman Sapkota Wins the IADC Young Author Award 2022

The International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC) bestowed the Young Author Award 2022 to Suman Sapkota, Research, Development and Innovation Engineer at Damen Dredging Equipment.

IADC’s Young Author Award is given annually to “stimulate the promotion of new ideas and encourage younger men and women in the dredging industry”. The award is granted at industry-leading conferences, with 2022’s winning young author selected from the proceedings of the WODCONXXIII, held from 16-20 May 2022 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

THE WINNER

Suman Sapkota was selected as the Young Author Award winner for his contribution to the paper “Erosion estimation on the impeller blades of centrifugal dredge pumps”. The focus of the paper is on developing, validating, and demonstrating a numerical model capable of estimating the erosion wear due to slurry flow on the impeller blades of a centrifugal dredge pump by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

“The jury was of the opinion that the winning entry provides added value to the developments within the dredging industry," said Rene Kolman, Secretary General of IADC. "It is a relevant topic and the entry represents solid research, backed up with good references and self-explanatory illustrations. Building knowledge and optimizing techniques is something we have to do. But also, something we must continue to invest in.”

THE AWARD

The purpose of the IADC’s Young Author Award is to stimulate the promotion of new ideas and encourage younger men and women in the dredging industry. Every year at selected conferences, the IADC recognizes the best paper written by authors younger than 35 years of age. The Conference Paper Committee recommends a shortlist of qualifying papers that make a significant contribution to the literature on dredging and related fields. Winning authors receive € 1,000 and a trophy of recognition as well as publication of the paper as an article in the IADC’s quarterly journal Terra et Aqua.

THE CONGRESS

The World Organization of Dredging Associations (WODA) is responsible for the organization of the World Dredging Congress (WODCON) which is held every three years. On behalf of the WODA, this year the Central Dredging Association (CEDA) hosted the 23rd World Dredging Congress in Copenhagen, Denmark. From 16-20 May 2022, hundreds of experts and peers in the waterborne transport infrastructure sector convened to present, discuss and exchange knowledge regarding the most current and relevant topics, trends and practices.
